KM-1820

Kyocera KM-1820 Digital Copier

  • Brand: kyocera
  • Category: Printer

The Kyocera KM-1820 laser all-in-one (AIO) doesn't offer outstanding print speed or quality, particularly for the price ($1,694 list as tested, with fax and automatic document feeder). But the features are so well balanced and so much in tune with what a typical small office needs that the unit is well worth considering. Call this a classic case of the whole being more than the sum of its parts—not that there aren't plenty of parts.

We count seven AIO functions as tested. The KM-1820 can print and fax over the network from a workstation; it can scan (with the command coming directly from your PC over a USB connection or, from the front panel, to an FTP server or shared folder); and it's also a standalone copier, fax machine, e-mail sender, and e-mail receiver. (E-mail sending, which works much like sending a fax, scans and sends documents as PDF attachments. E-mail receiving prints incoming e-mails.) The icing on the cake is the 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF), which lessens the chore of faxing, copying, and e-mailing multipage documents.

All of these functions are neatly housed in a compact, 17.9- by 19.5- by 16.6-inch (HWD) package that includes the 50-sheet ADF, a 250-sheet paper drawer, and a 50-sheet multipurpose tray. You can also add a second drawer ($149 list) to boost input capacity to 550 sheets, which is a reasonably large capacity for a small office.

According to Kyocera, the printer is normally sold with setup included in the price. That makes installation a nonissue, though unfortunately, the network installation routine falls well short of perfect. If you're not comfortable doing things like manually creating a new port, you'll definitely be thankful for dealer installation. We also found it odd that the e-mail receive feature didn't work with the printer's language setting as shipped. Kyocera points out that it's up to the dealers to change the setting during installation, but that means you have to make sure they know that you want to use that feature.
